Description

The Jolliffe Column and terraced base is a prospect column built in 1853 to commemorate Thomas Samuel Jolliffe. Designed by Joseph Jopling, it is made of ashlar and features a tapering cylindrical shape, described as resembling a lighthouse or a large candlestick. The column, which stands approximately 50 meters tall, is topped with a cage that was once adorned with stained glass, although most of this is now missing.

The pedestal of the column is square in plan and has a semi-circular head door opening, which is currently blocked. There are three incised stone tablets on the pedestal, one each in English, French, and Latin, commemorating Jolliffe. Windows are positioned at the angles of the pedestal. The column is set on a terraced base that is accessible by four sets of stone steps, which are flanked by curved balustrades.
