Description
Kilmersdon Lodges, gate piers, and gates consist of a pair of lodges built in 1788 by James Wyatt, with the gate piers and gates likely added in the early 19th century for the Jolliffe family. The lodges are constructed of ashlar and have missing roofs. Designed in the Greek Revival style, they are square in plan and flank the former driveway. The front and side elevations feature slightly projecting centers with pediments, while plain side and angle pilasters support an entablature with a plain frieze and cornice. Each front has a shallow portico with distyle Ionic columns. There are two blank windows on the front and one on each side, all with missing glazing and cambered heads. The door openings at the center of each portico are framed by moulded architraves, but the doors are missing. Between the lodges stand a pair of square ashlar panelled gate piers topped with moulded cornices and square die-shaped caps. The central double ornamental cast-iron gates and similar pedestrian gates complete the ensemble, which was noted to be in a distressingly poor state during a resurvey in May 1985.
