Description
The Church of St Lawrence is a parish church that dates from the late 14th and 15th centuries, with restoration work carried out in 1874 by C E Davis. It is constructed of random rubble with stone slate roofs, featuring coped verges and cruciform finials. The church has a clerestoried nave with four bays, north and south aisles, a north chapel that now serves as a vestry, a south porch, and a two-bay chancel.
The tower is embattled and diagonally buttressed, consisting of three stages with a stair turret. It has three-light bell chamber windows that are repeated on the stage below, along with a five-light west window that features panelled tracery. The west door is set within a moulded four-centred head surround, complemented by carved spandrels. The south aisle contains late 15th-century three-light windows, while the north aisle has renewed two-light openings. The clerestory also has two-light openings.
Inside, there is a four-bay arcade leading to the nave, and the chancel arch is in a matching style. The tower arch is panelled, and the tower features a stone fan vault. Most of the roofs are from the 19th century, except for the unceiled wagon roofs in the aisles, which have ribs and bosses, and the nave roof, which is supported by angel corbels. There are piscinae in both the north and south aisles, with the south piscina located on the south wall next to a cusped tomb recess and a nearby gabled and crocketed niche.
The church has two squints that open onto the chancel, a renewed three-light east window, a piscina, and an 18th-century altar rail with twist-turned balusters. The upper part of a former Norman doorway can still be seen in the vestry. Additionally, there is an octagonal Perpendicular font adorned with quatrefoils, along with two 17th-century chairs and a chest. The church also features six fine wall monuments from the 18th century and nine from the 19th century.
