Description
49 and 51 St Mary Street is a house that is now part of a hotel and restaurant, specifically Nos 45 and 47. It dates from the 17th century and was refronted and altered in the mid-19th century, with further changes made in the 20th century.
No. 49, on the left, is constructed of painted brick and features a hipped pantile roof with a square brick stack at the rear, set on a limestone rubble base. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a two-window range. The three windows are large casements; two are 19th-century windows located at eaves level on the first floor, while a 20th-century window on the ground floor to the left is set under a flat brick arch. Below the right-hand window is a 20th-century glazed door beneath a wide gauged brick arch, which is partly filled. To the right of this is a segmental arch leading to a wide planked 20th-century door.
No. 51, on the right, is made of painted limestone rubble and has a steep-pitched pantile roof. It is a single storey with a two-window range. To the left is a wide carriageway with a 20th-century flat arch, to the right is a 20th-century shop front, and in the centre is a very small slit window shaped like a bottle, positioned above eye level and cut from a single stone.
Inside No. 49, the front room features chamfered beams supporting a quartered ceiling. There is a 20th-century oak beam above a restored open fire located at the rear left, which has chamfered stone jambs, a bread oven to the rear left, and small niches to the right and front left. A short passage to the right leads to a rear room, with a staircase enclosed by a stud wall that rises from the back to the front between the fireplace and doorway. The rear room has an open fireplace that backs onto the one in the front room. The first floor, which is part of the hotel, has not been seen.
