Description

This is a bank barn located about 100 metres south of Patcombe Farmhouse, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with brick dressings and features a half-hipped pantile roof.

The barn has a rectangular plan, with an animal shelter on the ground floor that has an open front supported by an arcade of five round brick arches. The central arch is flanked by large 20th-century brick raking buttresses. The first floor features blind arches above the ground floor arches, with a large square-headed doorway at the centre, which has plank double doors. There is a similar doorway at the back, accessible from the higher ground level.

Inside, the original roof structure consists of tie-beam trusses with collars that are lapped and pegged to the faces of the principal rafters, along with staggered butt purlins. The unchamfered floor beams are supported by later timber posts.

This barn is one of the estate farm buildings situated within the landscaped park of Halswell House.
