ST 23 SW Bank barn about 100 metres 6/172 south of Patcombe Farmhouse

GV II

Bank barn. Circa late C18. Stone rubble with brick dressings. Half-hipped pantile roof.

Plan: Rectangular plan bank barn with animal shelter on ground floor with an arcaded open front and barn above with access from the higher ground level at the back.

Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 5-bay front. The ground floor is open-fronted with an arcade of 5 round brick arches, the centre arch flanked by large C20 brick raking buttresses. The first floor has blind arches above the ground floor arches but at the centre there is a large square-headed doorway with plank double doors. Similar first floor doorway at the back reached from higher ground level.

Interior: Original roof structure has tie-beam trusses with collars lapped and pegged to face of principles and staggered butt purlins. Unchamfered floor beams supported on later timber posts.

Note: One of the estate farm buildings in the landscaped park of Halswell House (qv.)
