Description
The remains of an 18th-century brick wall with gate piers, forming part of the former stable yard of Halswell House, are located near Grassby. The wall, approximately 50 metres long, is constructed of high Flemish bond brick with a dressed stone coping. The wall is divided into 11 bays by blind, semi-circular headed recesses that create an arcade effect, with emphasised impost detailing. A central recess has broad pilasters on each side and contains a door opening, now with a panelled door and a moulded slab hood supported by cut brackets. A moulded cornice sits atop the wall. Giant rusticated brick piers with moulded stone caps flank the ends of the wall. A single-storey lean-to adjoins the rear of the wall, with a portion having been converted into a dwelling; this has resulted in five of the recesses on the front being pierced with mid-20th-century one, two and three-light casement windows with glazing bars. A short section of walling exists to the left of the left-hand gate pier, and has some crenellated capping.
