Description

Bachelors Hall is a house dating from the late 18th century, located on Gills Lane in Rooks Bridge. The building is roughcast with a pantile roof and coped verges, featuring two brick stacks. It has a Gothick style with a garden frontage that is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The ground floor has two-light casement windows in an elaborate Gothick style, while the first floor features two-light windows with glazing bars and marginal lights.

The central entrance has a six-panelled door, and there is a 20th-century verandah that encloses the left half of the ground floor, topped with a pantile roof and glazed panels. To the right of the main frontage, there is a two-bay addition in a matching style, also from the 20th century. At the rear, there is a lean-to porch with a parapet and a wide, heavily moulded four-centred entrance arch that includes a central carved boss and moulded jambs, alongside a gargoyle. The inner door opening is pointed arch-shaped, leading to a four-panelled door in a Gothick style.

Inside, there are some original features, including a room at the rear of the ground floor that has three heavily moulded cambered ceiling beams with elaborate central bosses, which are believed to have been reused from the roof of the North aisle of the church of St Mary in East Brent, likely dating from the 15th century. Additionally, part of the entrance arch at the rear and the gargoyle may also date from this late medieval period.
