Description

The Old School is a mid-19th century building that originally served as a school and schoolhouse, and is now a house. It is constructed from random rubble and dressed stone, topped with a triple Roman tile roof featuring coped verges, a skylight, and three off-ridge rubble stacks. The building has an irregular frontage in a Domestic Revival style and consists of one storey and an attic with two bays on the left and one bay on the right. The right bay features three tall grouped lancets set in a slightly projecting wing under a gable, with each lancet divided at the first-floor level by a 20th-century rubble inset and casements that have horizontal glazing bars. The left two bays contain paired sash windows with horizontal glazing bars and a central stone dividing mullion for each pair, topped with painted arch heads. There is a narrow gabled half-dormer on the left side of the roof, which has a narrow six-pane sash window with a pointed head.

There are two door openings: the left door is set in a chamfered stone surround with a pointed-arch head, featuring a four-panelled door with the top two panels glazed and a projecting pent roofed hood supported by decorative wooden brackets. The right door is located in a slightly projecting stone porch, also in a chamfered stone surround with a pointed-arch head, and has a four-panelled door with the top two panels glazed. The building is primarily included for its group value with the nearby Church of St John the Baptist.
