Description
The churchyard cross, located about 5 meters south of the nave of the Church of St Aldhelm and St Eadburha, dates from the late 13th century to early 14th century and was restored in the late 19th century and again in 1965. It is made of Ham stone and features a renewed square plinth with a chamfered cornice and base. The square base supports a medieval socket that is broached to an octagon, with square shafts at each corner. The tapering octagonal shaft has a moulded fillet and a crocketed niche on the west face, which contains an unidentified figure standing on a bracket that forms a canopy for the figure below. The shaft is weatherworn, and the other sides are plain. Historical illustrations by Pooley show the cross before restoration, describing the upper figure as a man in a long robe raised to reveal his left foot, holding objects in each hand that are not identifiable. The lower figure is depicted as an ecclesiastic dressed as a pilgrim, bare-headed with a short staff in his right hand and a wallet hanging at his left side. The cross is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 296).
