Description

Shepton House with an attached service range is a house built in 1850 for John Stratton Coles. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble, featuring coped verges with kneelers, tile roofs, finials, and tall ashlar stacks with moulded caps. This building exemplifies High Victorian Tudor-Gothic architecture and is arranged in an L-plan, with the service range positioned at right angles to the rear, which also includes a stable yard.

The house has two storeys and an attic, with the garden front displaying three bays. The outer bays project slightly under front-facing gables, while the central bay features a gablet with a quatrefoil. The attic windows consist of two lights, each with a 4-centred arch head and labels. On the first floor, there are 2 and 4-light windows in a similar style, along with a first-floor band. The ground floor includes two shallow projecting bays with hipped stone roofs, featuring 4-light transomed stone-mullioned windows. The central lights form a pair of French windows with a 4-centred arch head, accompanied by a 3-light window.

The entrance front has a single bay projecting porch with a 4-centred arch outer door, and an oriel window above on the first floor. The inner door features paired half-glazed doors. To the left of the porch is a canted 6-light bay window with a transom and a segmental stone roof, above which is a lancet window. The service range is a single storey with an attic, and at the rear, there is a stable yard designed in a matching Tudor-Gothic style, accessed through a 4-centred arch carriage opening.

Inside, the house showcases High Gothic features, including a staircase, fireplaces, tile floors, and two coffered ceilings styled after Pugin. The rear elevation includes a reused 17th-century mullioned and transomed window, as well as a reused moulded stone 17th-century chimney piece.
