Description
Old Beams is a cottage dating from the early 18th century, constructed of local stone rubble with Ham stone dressings. It features an undulating asbestos cement slate roof between coped gables, which has replaced the original thatch, and has brick chimney stacks at each end. The building is two stories tall and has three bays.
The windows are hollow chartered mullioned types, with unworked top mitres. The lower windows are three-light with labels above, while the upper windows are two-light without labels; the exception is the upper bay one, which has a three-light leaded casement. There is a simple doorway with a timber porch situated between bays one and two, and above this is a small stone plaque inscribed "I.W. 1734." In bay one, modern garage doors have been inserted, framed by brick quoins.
Although the interior has not been seen, a report from November 1982 mentions features such as stop-chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, two 18th-century fireplaces (one with a stone lintel), and a circular staircase. The building has also served as a butcher's shop.
