Description
This is a mid-18th century direction stone located to the north of Middle Chinnock village at the junction of Smith's Hill and Smoky Hole Lane. Made from Ham stone, the direction marker dates from 1745 and features pointing hands carved into its surface. The stone stands approximately 130 centimeters high and tapers from 36 centimeters by 30 centimeters at the base to 33 centimeters by 28 centimeters at the top. The hands indicate the direction to named principal destinations, although distances are not provided.
On the south face, an upper inscribed cuffed hand points east to "EAST / NNICK," which is believed to refer to East Chinnock. Below this, another hand points west to "CREWKE/RNE ROAD." On the east face, another cuffed hand points north above the inscription "YEOVIL / ROAD," with an additional illegible word below. The date "1745" is also inscribed below this hand.
