Description
Ditton Lea is a house built in the mid-18th century, with alterations made around 1800 and 1860. It is constructed from Ham Hill stone ashlar, featuring stucco side wings and rubblestone returns, with rubblestone and brick at the rear and a slate roof. The house has a double-depth plan with rear outshuts and stands two storeys high, presenting a symmetrical three-window range. The windows have keyed flat stone arches over 8/8-pane sashes. The doorcase, dating from around 1860, is in the Regency style and includes a pediment, overlight, and a six-panel door; there are signs of an earlier, steeper-pitched pediment.
At the front, there are 20th-century single-storey wings with parapets that rise to meet the main structure. The first-floor windows at the rear feature unused wooden lintels positioned one course above the current windows. A single-storey addition from around 1800 at the rear includes a canted bay from 1860 on the left and a cast-iron trellised conservatory from 1860 on the right. Inside, the skirtings and doors are from the mid-18th century, while reeded cornices, a white marble fire-surround in the ground-floor left room, and some elliptical arches date to around 1800. The staircase, with turned balusters and newels, features a stair-window with coloured margin panes and a marble fire-surround in the ground-floor right room, both from around 1860.
The property also includes cast-iron gates and square-section open trellis gate piers at the front, which curve towards a former coach entrance on the left return. High brick walls, approximately 30 meters by 50 meters, enclose the back garden.
