Description
Nos 20, 22, and 24 Castle Street is a cross passage house that has been divided into three cottages. It dates from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The building is roughcast with pantile roofs and features two brick stacks and one rendered stack. It stands two storeys high and has an irregular arrangement of windows, consisting predominantly of 2-light casements with glazing bars. There are remnants of leaded lights in the window to the right on the first floor of number 20, and a further metal casement with leaded lights on the first floor to the left of number 22. Number 22 also has a sash window with glazing bars on the ground floor. Each cottage has a door opening with plank doors, while the doors to numbers 22 and 24 include glazed panels. There is an additional door opening to number 22 that leads to a through-way, which is believed to have been the original cross-passage. The interior of number 24 features a broad fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and a chamfered and stopped lateral ceiling beam. Some remains of 16th-century roof construction can still be seen.
