Description

The Chantry is a house that dates from the late 15th century and was enlarged in the 17th century. It is rendered over random rubble with a pantile roof and brick stacks. The building has a three-cell and cross passage plan oriented west-east, with a two-bay extension at the east end. It is two storeys and one and a half storeys high, featuring four bays on the upper floor and two on the ground floor. The fenestration is irregularly placed, with the main block's first floor having 19th-century three-light casements. The ground floor includes, from the left, a three-light window, a two-light window, a 20th-century French window, a tiny lancet window above to the right, and another three-light window. The extension has a pair of three-light dormers and a 20th-century window below. There is a tiled bread oven projection with a circular window on the left return elevation, and the entrance is located at the rear.

Inside, the house features jointed cruck trusses and a central room with a nine-panel heavily moulded compartment ceiling that has subsidiary quartering. To the left of the open fireplace, there is a winder stair with a chamfered lintel, and opposite it, a plank and muntin screen. The doorways have four-centred arch heads, and the beams are chamfered with sophisticated 17th-century stops.
