Description
Number 1 is a house located on a corner site, dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is rendered with Doulting stone dressings and features a Welsh slate roof behind parapets, along with brick chimney stacks.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a basement, with a five-bay east elevation facing the Cathedral Church of St Andrew. It has a plinth, plain end pilasters, a cornice, and a parapet with plain coping. The windows are sash style in plain openings, with 12 panes on the ground and first floors and 6 panes on the second floor, some of which are blind. The central entrance features a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight that has ornamented cast-iron glazing bars, some of which are radial. This door is framed by a stone doorcase with attached Doric columns, a full entablature, and a pediment. The north return elevation facing Cathedral Green has three bays that match the main elevation.
The interior has not been inspected, but the lower windows are noted to have panelled shutters.
Additionally, there are front boundary railings that extend from the centre of the flank of Number 25 Market Place. These railings start with a quarter curve and extend along the front of the house about 2 meters away, with a return along Cathedral Green. The low stone plinth supports wrought-iron railings with necked tops and cast-iron finials on the standards, along with a gate opposite the doorway, contributing to the overall setting of the house and the streetscape.
