Description
The walls linking the west cloister porch of the Cathedral in Wells are boundary walls located in the southeast corner of Cathedral Green. They are medieval in origin, with later modifications. Constructed from local stone rubble and Doulting stone ashlar, the walls are divided into three sections. The section extending west from the west cloister porch is approximately 3.5 meters high and features a battlemented top. In the center, there is a gateway added in the 1980s that leads into the Mary Mitchell Garden. The section that runs south to the Penniless Porch has a plain coping and a slight rise towards the porch tower. Beneath this section is a 20th-century segmental arched opening with a late 20th-century wrought-iron gate, providing access to the office premises on the east face of the tower (No. 16, Market Place). These walls are an important visual feature in the corner of Cathedral Green.
