ST5445 CATHEDRAL GREEN 662-1/7/35 (East side) Walls linking the west cloister porch of the Cathedral

GV II

Boundary walls in the south east corner of Cathedral Green. Medieval, with later modifications. Local stone rubble, and Doulting stone ashlar. In 3 sections: that extending westwards from the west cloister porch of the Cathedral (qv) is about 3.5m high, with battlemented top, and in centre a 1980s gateway into the Mary Mitchell Garden, the section southwards to Penniless Porch (qv) has a plain coping, with small sweep up to the porch tower, under which is a C20 segmental arched opening with a late C20 wrought-iron gate, giving access to the office premises attached to the east face of the tower (No.16, Market Place: qv). The walling is an important visual element in the corner of the Cathedral Green.
