Description
Number 2 is a house, possibly once two houses, dating from the late 17th century and later. It has a rendered and colourwashed exterior with stone dressings, a Welsh slate roof, and brick chimney stacks.
The building has a two-storey elevation that connects with Number 3 on the left, but internal alterations have resulted in the external appearance of two storeys and an attic on the left and three storeys on the right. The ground floor features a plain sash window on the left and a 12-pane sash window on the right, with a part-glazed 19th-century door between them, framed by a plain rendered surround and a flat cornice. The first floor has a modified ovolo-mould stone mullioned window with a hoodmould, which was originally three lights but is now two lights and has been deepened with horizontal bar casements inserted. To the right is a 20-pane sash window.
On the second floor, there is a gable on the left with a 2-light wood casement in an ovolo-mould surround with a label, and on the right, a small 2-light casement flanked by two 4-pane sash windows. The roof features a raised coped verge at the center, to the left of the doorway, and at the right-hand end, with brick stacks at each party wall.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely of interest.
The front garden is enclosed by railings on a low plinth, which have necked tops and cast-iron urn heads on the standards, with a gate opposite the door. These railings enhance the setting of the house and the overall streetscape. The property backs onto Numbers 17 and 19 Market Place.
