Description

No. 15 Market Place is a house with a shop, now functioning as a shop with a flat above. It dates from around 1453 and was built as part of the "New Works" by Bishop Bekynton, with modifications made in the 19th century. The building features ashlar stonework that has been colourwashed, a Welsh slate roof behind a parapet, and a brick chimney stack.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a single wide bay. The ground floor has a projecting shop front from the late 19th century, which includes fielded panel stall risers and plain display windows on either side of a deeply recessed central glazed door. To the right, there is a quarter-round window that likely replaces a former doorway. Above this is a slim fascia with a moulded cornice and a lead flat roof. The upper floors feature a wide shallow canted bay window with a lead flat roof below the parapet line, incorporating sash windows with 15+25+15 panes on the first floor and 9+15+9 panes on the second floor, with a dentilled mould at each level. A medieval string course is interrupted by a second-floor window, and to the left, there is a narrow buttress without offsets. The chimney stack is located to the left on a raised coped verge.

The interior has only been partially inspected. The ground floor shop has a four-compartment ceiling with moulded beams and a flat four-centred arch through the rear wall. There is a 20th-century stair leading to the first floor, and a stone newel is reported for the upper floor. This building is part of an outstanding late medieval planned urban group.
