Description
Sales House is a house that has been converted into flats, dated 1769. It is built of Doulting ashlar with a slate roof and ashlar stacks, showcasing a classical style with a symmetrical facade. The building has three storeys and nine bays arranged in a 3:3:3 pattern. The central three windows are set in an angular bay that rises through all floors, supported by three semi-circular arches with imposts, which form an open porch at the main entrance. The door opening is semi-circular with a radiating fanlight and a six-panelled door.
The porch is flanked by sash windows with glazing bars, framed in moulded architraves. The first and second floor openings have a similar design, with the first floor sills resting on moulded brackets and a triangular pediment above the central opening of each group of three windows. A moulded and dentil cornice is topped by a plain parapet with coping. There is an ornamental rainwater head on the left side, dated 1769.
To the right of the main facade, there is a projecting wing at right angles, which is rendered and has a slate roof. This wing also has three storeys and eight bays, featuring two-light stone mullioned windows, except for the extreme right of the wing where the second floor has a triple light window and a Venetian window below. The door opening in this wing has a flat entablature supported by slender Tuscan columns.
The building was once a Convent of Visitation Nuns belonging to an order founded around 1617 by St. Francois de Sales, and the community disbanded around 1810.
