Description

A row of five cottages located on East Street, built in the early 19th century. The cottages are constructed from local stone, cut and squared, with plain clay tiled roofs and simple gables. Brick chimney stacks are present. Each cottage is two storeys high and comprises two bays, with number 43 projecting slightly as a wide gable. They feature two-light leaded casement windows with iron frames, set within segmental arched openings constructed with voussoired detailing. Boarded doors are recessed within openings that match the windows.

Number 41 has a lean-to addition with a plain-headed window against the south gable, which is connected to number 40 by a shared wall and gate (which is listed separately). The chimney stack above this lean-to has been truncated. Number 42 has a small additional window on the right-hand side of the ground floor, and number 43 has a boarded-up circular opening in its gable, plus all windows on this property are three-light. Number 44 features a small added window at the lower left, while number 45 has its lower left window replaced with a steel casement and a concrete lintol.

A stone quoin set into the northwest corner of the building is inscribed with "EAST STREET." Some additions and alterations have been made to the rear of the properties. The interiors were not inspected.

The row is one of three identical blocks forming a long continuous row, and they have remained largely unchanged in their general appearance.
