Description
The Post Office and Archway, built in 1938, is located on the north side of Glastonbury High Street. This building features Bath stone ashlar with a tile roof and is designed in a late medieval style. It has two storeys and three bays. The ground floor includes square-headed plank doors on either side of paired three-light mullion and transom windows, which are topped with a hood-mould and a central traceried panel. On the upper level, two-light mullion and transom windows flank a five-light canted oriel window. The building is capped with a parapet that has a string course and a steeply pitched plain tile roof with verges.
While there have been some alterations and additions at the rear, the original tall stone chimney stack remains intact. To the right of the building is a double gate with stone walls on either side, topped with a swept tile roof supported by wooden brackets. The interior of the post office is largely unaltered, featuring a metal and glass security screen, Tudor-style ribbed doors in arched heads, and a moulded plaster ceiling.
This building is a notable and nearly unaltered example of the Post Office's commitment to designing structures that harmonize with their historic surroundings. It represents one of several efforts to create buildings that are in character with the two genuine 15th-century buildings located on Glastonbury High Street. The red brick structures in the yard behind the Post Office are not of special interest.
