Description

Nos 14 to 16 Willow Vale form a terrace of three circa 1720 clothiers' houses, with No 16 likely a later addition. The houses are built of coursed rubble with freestone dressings, and have pantile roofs, dormers, and stone stacks with capping. The buildings feature a moulded plinth and a moulded eaves cornice, arranged over two storeys and attics, with cellars underneath (3 + 3 + 2 gabled dormers). There are five windows spaced between Nos 14 and 15, and three between Nos 15 and 16. The ground floor windows are sashes set in bolection architraves incorporating cornices and pulvinated friezes. The central house, No 16, features panelled doors under hollow, semi-circular hoods supported by scrolled brackets, with bolection architraves to the door openings. The return of No 14 displays blocked narrow openings and a two-storey mullion window and a single light window at ground floor, both with moulded surrounds and drips. The rear of Nos 14 and 15 have stair turrets with bolection surrounds to glazing bar sashes. A small sash window with edge roll and cornice is located on the ground floor rear. No 15 has a stepped chimney to its rear extension. No 16 has a two-light ogee mullion window on the first floor. The interiors of Nos 14 and 15 retain good features, including staircases with heavy moulded handrails, straight strings, and squat balusters (No 15 has ball newels). No 15 also has stop-moulded ovolo door surrounds, and a bolection surround fireplace with an inserted egg-timer grate in the first-floor west room. A double-pile segmental barrel vaulted cellar adjoins the kitchen in No 15.
