Description
Crane Farmhouse is a farmhouse with medieval origins, which was extended in the 17th century and remodelled in the 19th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings, and features a clay pantiled roof between coped gables topped with gabletted finials and stone chimney stacks. The building has a complex closed U-plan, with the north-west section believed to be medieval and the south-east section dating from the 17th century, featuring a rebuilt front from the 19th century.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with a three-bay east elevation. It has horizontal bar casement windows, with four lights in the outer bays and three lights above. The central pointed arched doorway is protected by a timber, glass, and tile porch. On the ground floor of the north gable, there is a hollow chamfer mullioned two-light window with a hood mould, which may have been reset. There are also various straight joints in this gable, and at the bottom right, a relieving arch extends below ground level.
While the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain two massive cruck trusses in the north-west section, with tenoned purlins and one row of wind braces, showing some smoke blackening. In the south-west section, there is a room with a 12-panel framed ceiling, a curved head fireplace, and a flagstone floor. Crane Farmhouse is an important house, accompanied by an attached barn and a nearby Pigeon House, representing the abandoned capital messuage of the former Somerton Erleigh estate.
