Description
The building is a set of solicitors' offices and a shop, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared, with areas of Ham stone ashlar, some of which are painted. The roof is made of Welsh slate and features stepped coped gables with stone chimney stacks at either end. The building stands three storeys tall and has three bays, with a two-storey extension to the west.
The structure has a slight plinth and band courses between the floors, topped with a heavy moulded cornice that conceals a secret gutter. Each bay contains 16-pane sash windows set in architraved surrounds, each with a single small keystone. The central entrance features a six-panel door located in a semi-circular arched recess, framed with an architrave that includes an impost and keystone, and is topped by a radial glazed fanlight.
There is a projecting open stone porch supported by Ionic columns and pilasters, with ashlar panel infills on the sides. The lower bay has a small shopfront with a 30-pane display window and a partially glazed door to the right, situated in a deep recess. This shopfront is flanked by fluted side pilasters and has a plain fascia with a thin hood. The extension has three voussoired arches below, with sliding doors behind, and above it is a 16-pane sash window in an architrave that differs in proportions from the others.
The building is enclosed by a forecourt that is 4 metres deep and 2 bays wide, featuring a low stone wall to the east. To the south, there are square wrought iron railings with twist spearheads, set on a low stone base, along with matching gates that have urn finials on the gateposts, which return on the west side. This arrangement contributes to the overall setting of the building.
