Description

The Monk's Dairy is a house dating from the 16th or 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble, with some coursed and squared sections, and features double and triple-Roman tile roofs, along with two brick ridge stacks. The building has two storeys and is arranged in a 2:3 bay configuration. The windows include one, two, and three-light casements with horizontal glazing bars, and the roof slopes down to the left, where there is a 20th-century gabled dormer. On the ground floor, there is a four-light wooden-mullioned window, as well as a casement window nearby, both of which have stopped stone labels. There are two adjacent door openings framed in wood with plank doors. To the right of the main frontage, there is a rubble lean-to with a coped verge and a pantiled roof.

Inside, the north doorway to the cross-passage features a heavy wooden frame with bead moulding. There is a chamfered cross-beam in the passage against the back of the hall stack. The hall has a framed ceiling with deeply chamfered beams and a large fireplace that includes a chamfered cambered lintel and dressed stone jambs. The former inner (west) room, which is now divided, has a chamfered cross-beam with run-out stops. The lower left room contains a deeply chamfered cross-beam without stops and a large fireplace with a chamfered cambered lintel and chamfered stone jambs. The extreme east end room has both chamfered and unchamfered ceiling beams, and the first-floor rooms have exposed straight principal rafters.
