Description

Monk's Rest is a house dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of pebbledashed rubble with sandstone dressings and has a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a two-window front. The windows have rebated and chamfered mullions; the ground floor windows have five lights each, while the first floor windows have four. A rough drip course runs above the ground-floor windows. The central doorway has a moulded surround and an embattled lintel, topped with a flat sandstone hood supported by brackets. Gable chimneys are present. A two-light mullioned window is located in the right-hand gable wall, and four windows, each with four lights, are in the rear wall. Inside, the left-hand room contains a fireplace with a moulded surround and embattled lintel. An inscribed date, '1546,' is visible near the fireplace, although it is likely an anachronism given the style of the architectural features. A blocked doorway with a painted, chamfered surround is located to the right of the fireplace.
