Description

Box Bush Villa is a house dating from the 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of limewashed stone rubble and features a gable-ended roof covered with triple Roman clay tiles. The building has axial and gable-end stacks with rebuilt brick shafts.

The house has a two-room plan, with the principal room located on the left (south) side, which includes a fireplace in the south gable end and a newel stair beside it. The smaller room on the right (north) was likely originally unheated. There is a 19th-century one-room extension on the right end, which has an outshut at the back. An entrance lobby was created in the 19th century at the front of the principal room.

The exterior is two storeys high, with the east front partly covered in ivy. It features a 19th-century panelled door on the left and a three-light casement window above. There are two casements on the ground floor at the centre and a narrower two-panel door on the right. The rear (west) side has a lean-to outshut on the left, a 18th-century four-light timber window with later casements on the right, and above it, a similar three-light window with leaded panes.

Inside, the entrance lobby contains a late 17th-century panelled door leading to a cupboard and a wide timber newel stair. The principal room on the left has a panelled window seat with a decorative geometric punched design, along with 17th-century panelling and an ornate scrolled settle end on the right. It features a large fireplace with a chamfered timber bressumer and a cornice above with crenellation. The lobby door is made of wide planks with strap hinges. The room on the right has a chamfered axial beam with bar stops and a 20th-century brick fireplace. The right-hand extension includes 19th-century fireplaces, and the floors are made of flagstone. There are later partitions on the first floor, along with one studded plank door featuring strap hinges.
