Description

This is a row of five cottages located at 31 to 35 East Street, built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from locally sourced stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a plain clay tiled roof and featuring simple gables and brick chimney stacks. Each cottage is two storeys high and consists of two bays, with No 33 slightly projecting as a wide gable. The cottages have 2-light leaded casement windows with iron framed opening lights set in segmental arched voussoired openings. The doors are boarded with toplights in matching openings between the bays.

No 31 has had its lean-to removed and features a new side wall with a parapet and gate that matches No 30, along with a small window added to the lower right under a timber lintel. No 32 appears unchanged, while No 33 has 3-light windows and a boarded-up circular opening in the gable. No 34 has a mid-20th century part glazed door, and No 35 remains largely unchanged except for alterations to the lean-to roof and the removal of the link wall to No 36, where a flat-headed leaded casement has been inserted under a timber lintel. There have been some alterations and additions to the rear of the cottages, but the interiors have not been seen. This row is one of three identical blocks in a long row, all of which have retained their general character.
