Description
A pair of cottages, dating from the mid-19th century, incorporating elements from earlier buildings. The cottages are built of Cary stone, with ashlar facing south, and include fragments of Doulting and other stone. They have a plain clay tiled roof with plain gables and brick chimney stacks. The cottages are two storeys high, with four bays. They feature steel casement windows in earlier openings, each with a keystoned lintel, except for the lower outer bays, where a pair of French doors have been inserted. The south wall incorporates fragments, including a pair of approximately 2-metre-high Doric columns set within deep recesses. Above the columns are ogee-arched panels and crocketted finials; a further crocketted finial is located under the eaves. The east gable wall contains a blind 'Y'-traceried window. A lean-to is attached to the west gable. The origin of these fragments is unknown, but local tradition suggests they came from a building with monastic connections near Galhampton, possibly close to Foxcombe Farmhouse.
