Description

This is a row of five cottages, originally six, located on Main Road in Charlton Horethorne. They were likely built around 1840. The cottages are constructed of local stone ashlar with Welsh slate roofs and decorative bargeboarded gables. Yellow brick chimney stacks are also present. Each cottage has two storeys and one bay, although the two central cottages project forward with double gables. The windows are small-paned casements, with three lights on the lower level and two lights above, set within voussoired segmental arched surrounds. Slate and timber verandahs are attached to the two outer cottages. The doors are studded and boarded, set in return projections and at the ends of the block within heavy frames. The interiors remain unseen. Five of the original six cottages have remained essentially unaltered. Number 640 was adapted in the early 20th century to become part of the attached Church of England Voluntary Aid Primary School and is therefore not included in the listing. The cottages form a pleasing group with the nearby Parish Church and former Vicarage.
