Description

Somerset Court is a country house, now used as a school. It was built in the late 18th century, with additions made in the 19th century and alterations in the 20th. The house is rendered, with a double-pitched slate roof, end pilasters, a projecting band at the first floor level, a moulded cornice, a parapet with plain coping, and rendered stacks with moulded caps. It features two box dormers. The design is classical in style.

The main house is two storeys and an attic, with three bays. It has 12-pane sash windows with marginal lights on the ground floor, and 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, along with a narrower 4-pane window to the right. A projecting Doric portico is on the right side, featuring a flat entablature, a triglyph frieze, a modillion cornice, a parapet with plain coping, and a 6-panelled door with a transom light. Fluted engaged Ionic columns are on either side of the door, with 4-pane sash windows to each side of the portico.

A wing is attached to the right, built in a similar style and stepped down over three levels with 2 bays on each of the three levels. This wing primarily features sash windows with glazing bars, with some casement windows. A mid-19th century panelled ceiling is found in a former ballroom, which also has a late 18th-century marble fireplace surround.
