Description
Hillside is a cottage dating from 1694, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was once part of a larger house with Lower Hillside. The exterior is rendered with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and originally three bays wide, with a bay added to the right. The entrance on the left side of the centre has a chamfered surround and a lintel inscribed with the date 1694 and the initials W.R.E. A round-headed wooden hood is supported by shaped stone brackets. A 6-panelled door, dating from the early 19th century, is positioned at the entrance. The ground floor on the left has a 3-light window with 8-pane fixed outer lights and a stepped, milled stone-surrounded sash central light. A matching window is located above. To the right of the entrance is an early Victorian window with 20-pane sashes, and a 3-light double chamfered window above with fixed lights. On the extreme right is a tall chamfered casement window, likely marking the position of a former staircase. Two ridge stacks are present, the right-hand one indicating the junction of the original gable and the added bay. A rear extension, dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, contains an open-string dog-leg staircase with turned and fluted balusters and a wreathed handrail.
