Description

This outbuilding, located approximately 6 metres south of Old Spa Villa, is likely from around 1808 and was associated with the spa developed by Sir William Chaytor. It has been rendered and features red sandstone ashlar dressings, topped with a 20th-century clay pantile roof. The structure is single storey and consists of three bays, with the central bay slightly projecting. Designed in the Gothick style, it has large chamfered rusticated quoins on all sides. Each bay contains a pointed-arched opening with a hoodmould; the central bay has boarding that mimics a door, while the outer bays feature sash windows with intersecting glazing bars at the top. The roof appears to have been slightly raised over the central bay. Access is currently through large doors on the right side. The Old Spa was established as a watering place starting in 1808, and this building may have originally served as the first bath-house.
