Description
Old Spa Villa is a house built in the early 19th century, likely for Sir William Chaytor and possibly designed by Ignatius Bonomi. It features brown brick construction and a 20th-century concrete interlocking tile roof. The building has one and two storeys, arranged in a 2:3:2 bay configuration, with a rear outshut to the central two-storey range. This central section has a first-floor string course and eaves band, and all openings are topped with flat brick arches.
In the central bay, there is a recessed blocked doorway with a blind window above it. The windows are sash style with glazing bars and ashlar sills. The roof is hipped with a central chimney stack. The outer bays are single-storey pavilions, each featuring an inner board door below a three-pane overlight, with windows matching those in the central section. The roofs of these pavilions are hipped towards the outer ends, with an end stack on the left.
Nearby, a sulphurous spring flows into the stream. The Old Spa was developed as a spa resort starting in 1808, although the waters had been known since the 17th century.
