Description
Spa Cottages, located in Croft-on-Tees, is a building that includes a coach-house and a house, which was being converted into a single residence at the time of the last survey. The structure dates from the early to late 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of coursed red sandstone and features a 20th-century clay pantile roof. The building is two storeys high and has a layout of four bays on the left and two bays on the right, with a continuous rear outshut.
The original range on the left was formerly a coach-house with accommodation above, featuring four segmental-arched openings with brick arches and ashlar piers. On the first floor, there are 20th-century sash windows with glazing bars. To the right is the added house, which has four-pane sash windows with ashlar lintels and sills; the ground floor opening on the left was formerly a door. The building has 20th-century brick kneelers and ashlar coping, with brick stacks located at the left end, between the fourth and fifth bays, and at the right end, the latter featuring dogtooth brickwork.
On the right return, there is a sash window on each floor in both the main range and the outshut, which were originally positioned to provide a view along the approach track. The outshut also has a stack with dogtooth brickwork. Inside the house, the ground-floor room features decorative plasterwork with a central ceiling boss and an undercut cornice, along with a cast-iron fireplace set in a black marble surround that is hand-painted with flowers. There is a simple turned baluster staircase and a cast-iron fireplace on the first floor.
Historically, the building was associated with the New Spa buildings constructed around 1827, which provided hot and cold baths, changing rooms, a lounge, and a long veranda. The coaches that were housed here were used to transport visitors from Croft Spa Station, and the house was added for the Spa keeper.
