Description
Newsham Mill is a disused watermill, partly converted into a pottery, likely built in 1656 with later alterations. The structure is made of rubble with a stone slate roof and has two storeys with two openings on the first floor. The building features quoins and a ground floor that includes, from left to right: a small low-level opening for the gearing chamber; added external stone steps; a blocked single-light window with a dressed stone surround; a board door beneath a deep, irregularly-shaped lintel supported on imposts, with graffito "DL" on the left and two recessed panels on the right, one damaged and inscribed "[I]656" and the other "WI 1807", along with strange symbols between the panels; and a larger single-light window with a dressed stone surround.
On the first floor, there is a board door under a timber lintel and a sash window with glazing bars, also under a timber lintel. The roof has two roof lights. To the right, there is a single-storey outbuilding that is not of special interest. The left side of the mill displays the cast-iron skeleton of an overshot water-wheel, while the right side has a recessed panel on the quoin inscribed "WH 175[?]".
Inside, the ground floor contains a pitwheel and spur-gearing in a wooden hurst with an ark, while the first floor features a pair of peak stones in a tun, a drive to an oat dresser, and a mechanism for a sack-hoist. The mill remains almost complete and represents an early phase of corn watermills in North Yorkshire.
