NEWSHAM, MILL LANE (west side), Newsham Mill

II

Disused watermill, partly converted as pottery. Probably 1656 with later alterations. Rubble, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 2 first-floor openings. Quoins. Ground floor, from left: small low-level opening lighting gearing chamber; added external stone steps; blocked single-light window in dressed stone surround; board door under deep irregularly-shaped lintel supported on imposts, on the left is graffito "DL", on the right are 2 recessed panels, the left damaged and inscribed "[I]656", the right "WI 1807", with strange symbols on space in between panels; larger single-light window with dressed stone surround. First floor, from left: board door under timber lintel; sash window with glazing bars under timber lintel. 2 roof lights. Single- storey outbuilding to right not of special interest. Left return: cast-iron skeleton of overshot water-wheel. Right return: recessed panel on quoin inscribed "WH 175[?]". Interior: on ground floor, pitwheel and spur-gearing in wooden hurst with ark; on first floor a pair of peak stones in tun; drive to oat dresser; mechanism for sack-hoist. The mill survives almost complete and represents a relatively early phase of corn watermills in North Yorkshire.
