Description
The Market Cross and Stocks in Newsham is a 16th-century cross that was restored in 1828 and 1935, with the stocks also dating from 1828. The cross is made of ashlar sandstone and features wrought-iron stocks. It stands on three square steps that support an octagonal base, topped with a monolithic tapering shaft and a 20th-century cap inscribed "RSTD 1828 1935". A metal spike is secured at the top by four brackets. To the east of the cross, there is a pink granite boulder with wrought-iron shackles, which include a hinge and lock, featuring three larger holes and one smaller hole. Newsham was known for its significant market during the Tudor and Stuart periods. According to T. Bulmer's "History, Topography and Directory of North Yorkshire" from 1890, the old stone cross was repaired by subscription in 1828, and at that time, the wooden stocks were replaced with iron ones, which remain well-preserved.
