Description

The Old School dates to 1869, as indicated by a datestone, with a 20th-century extension added later. It is constructed of hammered sandy limestone on a chamfered plinth, with ashlar quoins and dressings; the extension is of red brick in English garden wall bond and stone. The roof is slate, with corrugated iron to the extension. The building is a cruciform design with a lean-to in the rear re-entrant angle, and a rear extension. The central cross gable projects and is flanked by single-story, single-window bays. The cross gable features a three-light window of stepped lancets beneath a coved hoodmould resting on corbel heads. Above the window is a roundel with the inscription: "In Memory of William Rutson Esq 1869." The flanking bays also have lancet windows beneath hoodmoulds with foliate corbel stops. Eaves guttering is supported by lion mask clamps. The gables are coped and finished with gablets and elaborately shaped kneelers, along with crested ridge tiles and fleur-de-lys finials. The left return has a gabled bay with a single-story lean-to on its left side, featuring a stepped lancet window and a gable-end roundel containing a blind quatrefoil. A two-light chamfered mullion window is in the lean-to. The right return mirrors the left return. A bay on the right has a nail-studded board door in a double-chamfered quoined opening with a pointed hoodmould on foliate stops; a plain shield is located above the door. The 20th-century extension at the rear does not have special architectural significance. The building was unoccupied at the time of inspection.
