Description

The Castle Hotel and Foxtor House comprise an early 19th-century house with a shop and cafe, located on the south side of Market Place in Middleham. The building is constructed of rendered rubble with an artificial tile roof. The main elevation has an irregular arrangement of one, three, and one bays. The central section features a six-panel door set within an ashlar surround with a keystone. To the left is a 20th-century square shop window. Other windows are set in ashlar surrounds; the first floor has a sash window with glazing bars, while the outer bays feature sixteen-pane sashes. The upper floor windows are smaller and unequally hung. Elaborate modillion gutter brackets are present, though some are missing. The bay on the left is slightly recessed, mirroring the doorway and window pattern. The bay on the right projects forward with rounded corners. It includes windows on the left return, with sixteen-pane sashes on the first floor, and sash windows on the ground and second floors. The left end has shaped kneelers and an ashlar coping, and additional stacks are present. A projecting two-storey brick range extends to the rear. The building is included on the list for its group value.
