Description
The Bank Barn is a building dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-18th century. It is constructed of slobbered rubble, brought to course, with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The barn consists of six bays. The waggon entrance located in the fourth bay features a chamfered surround and a basket-arched lintel, with plank doors. Three massive stone corbels, each carved with an inverted triangle, support a thin slate hood above the entrance. There is a rubble plinth on both the left and right sides. The two windows on the right side have 20th-century casements, and there are breather openings at the ground floor and eaves, along with a slate string course.
The left-hand bay lacks a rubble plinth and is an addition to the gable end, dated 1763, featuring a plain surround to the entrance with a lintel inscribed with the initials I.S.I (John Ingleby). On the right-hand return, both the left and right entrances have chamfered surrounds. There is a three-light double chamfered mullioned window with a slate hood, along with a similar window in the gable and a two-light window at the apex. The stone used in this barn was likely reused from Lawkland Hall, as the lintels are made from former transoms of taller windows.
Inside, the mid-18th century left-hand bay has a king-post truss, while the remaining bays feature a king post on collar, chamfered principals, and trenched purlins. This barn closely resembles another barn located approximately 250 meters southwest of Lawkland Hall, both of which are part of the Lawkland Hall estate.
