Description

LAWKLAND LAWKLAND SD 76 NE 8/54 Bank Barn 20.2.58 GV II Barn. Late C17 with mid-C18 alterations. Slobbered rubble, brought to course, stone dressings, stone slate roof. 6 bays. Waggon entrance in fourth bay has chamfered surround, basket arched lintel; plank doors. 3 massive stone corbels, each carved with inverted triangle, support a thin slate hood. Rubble plinth to left and right. 2 right-hand windows have C20 casements. Breathers at ground- floor and eaves. Slate string course. Left-hand bay has no rubble plinth and is an addition to the gable-end dated 1763; plain surround to entrance with dated lintel inscribed I.S.I (John Ingleby). Right-hand return; left-hand and right-hand entrance have chamfered surrounds. 3-light double chamfered mullioned window with slate hood and similar window in gable, with similar but 2-light window in apex. This stone was probably reused from Lawkland Hall (qv) as the lintels are made from former transoms of taller windows. Interior: Mid-C18 left hand bay has king-post truss; remaining bays have king post on collar; chamfered principals, trenched purlins. This barn is very similar to the barn c250 metres south west of Lawkland Hall (qv) both of which are part of the Lawkland Hall estate.
