Description

Milton House and railings, located on the south side of Swine Market in Middleham, is an early 19th-century house constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof, accompanied by cast-iron railings. The house is two storeys tall and features three bays. It has plasticated quoins and a central 20th-century glazed door with an overlight that includes decorative glazing bars, set within a doorcase that has plain pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course above.

Above the door, there is a sash window with glazing bars framed by a plain ashlar surround. The house has flanking two-storey segmental bows, each with tripartite sash windows on the ground floor and sashes with glazing bars on the first floor, all set in plain ashlar surrounds. A first-floor sill band runs across the façade, and there is a plain ashlar string below a cyma recta cornice, topped with a plain parapet. The house has end stacks.

To the left of the house, there is a recessed bay featuring board doors within a narrow carriage opening, which has a segmental arch made of rubble voussoirs and an ashlar keystone. Above this opening, there is a sash window with glazing bars. The left side of the house is finished with a shaped kneeler and ashlar coping. In front of the house, there is a low rusticated wall topped with mid-19th-century cast-iron railings.
