Description

The Church of St Michael is a Grade II* listed building located in Great Edstone. It dates back to the 13th century, with additions and alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The church is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a slate roof and a timber bellcote. It consists of a single cell nave and chancel, with a west bellcote and a south entrance lobby.

The south doorway is adorned with voussoirs and has a pointed cavetto-moulded drip moulding that springs from imposts. Above the doorway, there is an Anglo-Danish sundial, similar to one found at St Gregory's Minster in Kirkdale. To the right of the doorway, there is a lancet window and paired lancets in a restored surround. The chancel has two round-headed cross-windows from the 18th century, set in raised surrounds, and a single lancet window in the west end that has been extensively restored. The north wall features a blocked doorway with a pointed moulded arch, along with one round-headed cross-window in the chancel.

Inside, the church contains 16th-century altar rails and a Norman font with arcade carving at its base. The bells are believed to date back to the 14th century. All windows are deeply splayed internally, and there is notable 19th-century stained glass in the west lancet. The inscription on the sundial reads: 'Orologicum viatorium. Lodan me wrohte a.'
