Description

Halton Place is a large house built in 1770 by John Crunden for Thomas Yorke, with alterations made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The house is rendered with stone dressings and has a slate roof, featuring a central hall plan.

The facade is tripartite, with three storeys and three bays, highlighted by a gabled central feature flanked by slightly projecting single-bay gabled storeys on either side. The central entrance has a recessed Tuscan porch supported by two columns and two pilasters, with a repressed entablature and a string course above, displaying the coat of arms of Yorke impaling Wright. The entrance features a moulded architrave and two-leaf doors, each with four panels.

The ground floor has four sash windows, while the first floor has five sash windows. The second floor contains three windows: a left-hand window with six panes and casements in the other two, all with sill bands. A lunette window is located in the central pediment, and there are eaves stacks on either side of the central block.

To the left of the main house is a service wing built around 1880, which is two storeys high and has two bays, constructed of dressed stone. It features one ground floor and two upper floor sash windows, along with a central ridge stack. At the rear, there is a two-storey extension from around 1900 with four bays, which includes a ground floor billiard room.

Inside, the hall features an open string dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and a ramped wreathed handrail. The dining room and drawing room are adorned with plaster friezes of festoons and fans, complemented by matching chimneypieces.
