Description

The Old Cottage is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with earlier remains from the 16th century. The original timber frame is encased in brown brick in an English bond, and the roof is covered with pantiles. It is a building of 1½ storeys and consists of three bays, employing a baffle-entry plan. A C19 wooden panelled door is located at the front, alongside a pair of two-light, six-pane casement windows to the left and right. A side-sliding sash window with 12 panes is found to the far right. On the upper floor, a fixed, leaded-light window sits to the left, while two 20th-century dormer windows are positioned to the right. The roof is hipped on the left side and gabled on the right. Chimney stacks are situated on the ridge opposite the front door and the right gable. Inside, remnants of the original timber-framed house remain, including rear and end aisles and a firehood. Further details are provided in Vernacular Buildings of North Yorkshire and Cleveland by B. Hutton and B. Harrison, 1984, and in North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group Report Number 85.
