Description
The gate piers within the grounds of Yew Court, located approximately 10 metres west of the house, date from around 1742. They are made of dressed sandstone and are circular in shape, measuring about 2 metres in diameter. The garden side features half-glazed doors with decorative iron glazing bars and heavy stone lintels. Each pier has two small oval openings on the street side, which were originally unglazed. A projecting moulded cornice runs below the domed tops, which were likely rebuilt in the 19th century. Inside each pier, there is a corresponding projecting stone band at the base of the concave roof. These piers were likely constructed when Yew Court was built on the site of an earlier structure believed to have ecclesiastical origins. They are depicted in two paintings by John Atkinson Grimshaw from 1877, which are now in the Leeds City Art Gallery.
