Description
Melbourne House is a mid-18th century house located on South Street in Scalby. It is constructed of painted brick with stone quoins at the front and hammer-dressed stone at the rear, topped with a pantile roof and featuring brick stacks. The house has a central stairhall plan, is one room deep, and includes a rear service range. The symmetrical front is two stories high with three windows. The central entrance features a six-panel door beneath a rectangular fanlight, framed by a fluted pilastered doorcase with a moulded cornice supported by grooved consoles. The upper sash windows are sash style with glazing bars, and gauged brick arches are present throughout the building. The gable walls are coped and have moulded kneelers, with end stacks on the front range of the double span roof. Inside, there is a 19th-century enclosed staircase and a mid-18th century fireplace in the ground floor room to the left.
