Description

The terrace of ten houses at 4-13 Castle Crescent dates to around 1840 to 1850. It forms a shallow crescent of two-storey and basement grey brick houses with a moulded eaves cornice and a low slate roof. Several original dormers, both flat and pedimented, are present. Numbers 4 and 5, and 12 and 13, project slightly as terminal features, treated as a single facade which includes a recessed entrance bay on the side. Each house originally had one window, with a blind window above the front door. A stone sill course runs along the first floor, and there is a stone band below the ground floor. The doors are of four moulded panels, some of which have been altered, and they are topped with rectangular fanlights in architrave surrounds. Number 7 has a three-storey, rectangular bay window addition with slate hanging. Stone steps lead to the entrances; those to numbers 5 and 12 are centrally positioned within the end blocks and have cast iron railings lining the steps. Numbers 1 to 13 form a group.
