Description
The Church of St Mary Immaculate (Roman Catholic), along with its presbytery and former monastery, was built between 1849 and 1854 by architect Charles Francis Hansom for the Middleton family of Stockend Park, intended for the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The church is constructed of sandstone and features a slate roof. It has a four-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, with a liturgical west bell cote. There are additions including a north porch and north transept, made around 1865 and attributed to architect Edward Welby Pugin. The design reflects the middle pointed style reminiscent of Augustus Welby Pugin, while the richer geometric style is characteristic of Edward Welby Pugin. The church includes two-light windows in the nave and chancel, as well as a three-light case window. Inside, the church has open trussed roofs in both the nave and chancel, a west gallery supported by cast iron columns that were brought from another location, and a contemporary three-light east window designed in the style of William Wailes. There is also a confessional built out below the west gable and 20th-century gothic altar, reredos, and panelling attributed to Thompson of Kilburn, a woodworker. Attached to the church is a quadrangle originally intended for the oblate priests, featuring coursed sandstone and slate roofs, two storeys with attics, two-light casements, and gothic trefoil-headed dormers.
