Description
Low Buildings Barn is a barn dated 1774, constructed from coursed squared gritstone rubble with a graduated stone slate roof. The barn features seven bays, with an aisle on the east side of bays five, six, and seven, and a shallower low central cart entrance that shares the same roof line. Notable architectural details include quoins and a monolithic lintel above the cart entrance, which bears the inscription "MW" 1774. There is an inserted window in bay one, and a doorway to the aisle bays on the left return, which has a large lintel and three-part jambs, along with a small square opening above. The barn is adorned with bulbous kneelers and gable copings.
At the rear, there is a tall central cart entrance with quoined jambs and a cambered arch, as well as small slit vents to the left. The left return features a byre door with monolithic jambs and a lintel to the right. Inside, the barn has six roof trusses with raking struts, and the tie beams are supported by two aisle posts at their east end. The aisle posts are made of slender, crudely cut timbers, and the post to truss six divides into two, with a single brace supporting the tie beam. This barn is an interesting example of the use of smaller trees and poorer timber in the later 18th century compared to the remains of 17th-century barns.
